From Squats to Slots: Bathroom Basics for Travelers
It’s not the most glamorous travel topic, but let’s be real. Bathrooms abroad can be… an adventure of their own. Knowing what to expect (and packing a few essentials) can save you from uncomfortable surprises. Here are some quick tips:
Expect to Pay in Europe
Public restrooms aren’t always free, and they’re not as common as in the U.S. Carry small coins just in case, and remember to use the free toilets before leaving restaurants/museums .
Squat Toilets Are Common
In Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, squat toilets are the norm. It’s all about balance — and practice. Relax and work on those quad muscles ahead of time. You'll get the hang of it in no time!
Bring Your Own Supplies
Toilet paper, soap, and even hand dryers aren’t guaranteed. Pack tissues/TP, a mini bar of soap, and hand sanitizer.
Consider a She-Pee Device
For women, especially on hikes or in areas with only squat toilets, a she-pee device makes life easier.
Mind the Plumbing
In many countries, flushing toilet paper isn’t allowed as it can jam up the pipes. Look for the wastebasket beside the toilet instead.
Watch for Cultural Norms
In some cultures, the left hand is seen as unclean, and bidets replace paper. Researching cultural norms (even relating to the bathroom) can be so helpful!
